Marigolds

I planted some seeds just a couple of days ago and then, BAM! Here come some more marigolds to join the others that are exploding.

I've read a few blogs where, coincidentally, the topic is using and saving seeds. I planted seeds for: marigolds, parsley, chives, basil, watermelon, cantaloupe, onions, beets, radishes, carrots, and peas. The only seeds I plan to save are those from the marigolds. I plant these seeds in areas adjacent to tomatoes. Aphids and other bugs are supposed to be repelled by marigolds. They're growing well and so are the tomatoes.

Bare root stock is great too: plum, peach, apple, grape, strawberry, pear, nectarine, apricot, lilac.

I'm not planning on saving the earth by gardening. I'm not THAT arrogant, yet. I prefer to garden - period. It's a nice benefit to know where my produce is being grown. The best benefit is the flavor and quality. Oh yes, a nice side benefit of saving money and having a bit of exercise is great too.

It's great to learn about the anti-pest properties of marigolds. Mums (Chrysanthemum) also work to repel pests.

I really like your sensible philosophy on your garden in the last paragraph. I have an organic garden, but I also do hydroponics. For me, it's all about being able to provide for my family and enjoy it.

Thanks for dropping by my blog.

I bought the seeds, but never got around to planting them. Oddly enough, I have never had any problems growing tomatoes - no fruit flies, aphids, blight, nothing. They do pretty well here and I have a soil that is a mixture of clay and heavy mountain soil (which I've lightened a bit with sand and manure). I only wish I could say the same for carrots. Haven't had any luck with those yet.

Hi Maybelline. I came upon your blog via A Sonoma Garden. I enjoyed scrolling through your posts all the way back as far as February. I live in the northern end of the Central Valley but lived in Bakersfield for about eight years. I'll be checking in to see how things turn out this season and I look forward to it.
