Garlic

DSC_1579_4488

This is the 1st time garlic was grown in the garden.  It was planted in October and harvested in May.  Success!  It was fairly easy to grow and fairly easy to braid.  Currently, the braid is being snipped at a rapid pace as salsa production goes into full gear.  Another great use is to chop it up and cover it with olive oil to use on anything being grilled.

Garlic nuts swarm to the Garlic Festival held annually in Gilroy, California.  It’s happening July 23-25 this year.  I’ve never been and wonder about using garlic to flavor ice cream.  Maybe if I lived closer I would visit the festival and give the ice cream a try.

I’ll plant again in the fall.  In the meantime, vampires continue to fly over.

This was our 2nd year harvesting garlic - we love it and find it super easy to grow. The waiting time is hard but having it ready just in time for salsa works for me! Impressed with that braid. Great job and pics!

Wow! How awesome. I really want to grow some garlic for next year. I suppose I'll bet putting it in this fall - thanks for the reminder and motivation!

Your garlic looks fabulous! Do remember which variety you planted? I've been to the Gilroy Garlic Festival...it was a miserably hot, dry, dusty afternoon. It was so hot, I was brave enough to try the garlic ice cream...and it was better than I expected. I wouldn't serve it a la mode with pie, but not as strange as I anticipated. Lovely garlic braid by the way!

What a pretty garlic braid. Have you tried to pickle some of it? I've got an order of garlic arriving for fall planting .. a first in our garden.

*Maureen - thanks. I believe your harvest was much larger than mine.
*And - Muchos gracias.
*Daphne - Good luck and enjoy.
*Curbstone - I'm sorry to say that I planted garlic that wasn't labeled properly at the nursery. The label only lists it as California Garlic. I was desperate to find some and simply took what I could find.
Mrs. - Pickled? My aunt could pickle anything and did. This is something she tackled. I'm just keeping it handy for kitchen use. We use it quite a bit.
