Ye Gads! My windows are hideous. But that’s not the point. The point is that I scored a Heinz Tomato plant at the Tomato Ladies stand down at the Farmers’ Market this morning. I wanted to try this variety and thought I would wait until next season. What a nice surprise to see this variety available to me for a simple $2 investment.
This is what Victory Seeds has to say about this variety:
75 days, determinate — An early, bright red, crack resistant fruit. Heavy yielder with Fusarium and Verticillium disease resistance. A good processing type tomato bred and originally released by the Heinz Company.
Crack resistant?! That’s a relief. It’s good to know that “Just Say ‘No’” is working.
There are several sub varieties of the Heinz. All I know is “Heinz”.
I’m hopeful.
Where were you in 1979?!

I'm growing that variety too (hopefully). I have a few that germinated and I'm hoping it turns out to be a good tomato!
Never tried that variety. Hope it does well for you! I planted Better Boy and Super 100s.
Don't have a Heinz tomato plant, but I know where I was in 1979.....right here watching that commercial.
Also was working at 20th Century Fox Studios and sneaking into the set of "Mash".
William Woods College in Fulton, MO or home on summer break. I would only eat Heinz ketchup though!
I was watching this commercial AND M*A*S*H. Lo, let's hear more about your story. 1979 was so many years and pounds ago.
I never known that Heinz actually have their own variety. I have not come accross the seeds here in OZ. 1979, have not been created yet ;-).
In '79 I was in New York City, and raising tomatoes was the farthest thing from my mind!
I started raising tomatoes in 1988 or thereabouts, in Seattle, and we had to choose cool-summer varieties.
You're making me think of getting some patio seedlings this spring!
I too had never heard of the Heinz variety before but am intrigued. I'm eager to see how well it does.
In 1979 I was 12 years old living at home on Long Island. So long ago now that I don't remember much except I wanted more than anything to be 24 and living on my own.(Why are we always so in a hurry to grow up?) Growing tomatoes was not yet in the plans for this soon-to-be city career girl. Best laid plans...I never made it to Manhattan LOL! At 24 I was living the career girl dream in Bakersfield!
Bakersfield?!
I know right? Long way from home! For three years I was a general assignment reporter at The Bakersfield Californian. Mostly I chased around police cruisers, ambulances and fire trucks.
