Do You Know What is Sprouting?

DSC_2182_5202

This final blast of heat was good for something.  All the fall seeds are up.  The broccoli pictured here came up in about 2 days.  BAM!  Not only did the seeds that were lovingly planted in straight rows successfully germinate; but clumps of seeds punched through the damp soil into the hot fall air.  An example is that stand of seedlings behind the dirt clod above.  Do you know what is sprouting?

DSC_2185_5205Two of the vegetable beds have these seedlings coming up in random clumps.  Do you know what is sprouting?

You can submit your guess here on the comments or shoot an email.  Oh, there isn’t any prize except the fact that you know you’re right.  And sometimes knowing you’re right feels pretty good.

Looks like spinach to me:)

....but I can't remember if you planted spinach. It also looks a bit like volunteer tomatoes or cosmos. (can I just keep rattling off plants till I get it right?)

"volunteer" tomatoes

hbierlich nailed it. I have globs of volunteer tomatoes sprouting right where they dropped. I didn't plant spinach this fall because I didn't have much success last year. I'm loaded with a bunch of other produce.

Tomato seeds are such survivors that they can endure the heat of a compost pile.

I once worked at a theatre where, after events, the caterers dumped food waste like salad in one of the ornamental shrubbery beds behind the building. We had volunteer tomatoes for years.
